This module was created for palliative caregivers who care for others with cultural beliefs and values that differ from their own. Canada has always been a country of immigrants and palliative caregivers operate in diverse communities. Association with a particular cultural, ethnic or religious group may influence attitudes toward death and dying, the expression and meaning of pain and suffering, attitudes towards disclosure of illness and whom in the family is the decision maker, as well as the choice of healer and treatment regimen and many other aspects of illness and dying. The goal of providing culturally competent care to diverse cultural groups at the end of life is to be aware that a variety of beliefs, values, traditions, and practices exist and to honor these when providing care.
