Is there life after life??

I don't know if I'm opening up a can of worms but this seems to be an appropriate place to be asking this kind of question.  After a person dies do they still live?
I've tried to answer that question myself from my own personal experiences and from reading books but I'm not a "spiritual" type and have a severely limited ability to see into these matters.   As I open up to this idea I find myself frustrated and confused at times... and yet...this concept of life after life seems to be the only philosophy/perspective that pacifies the wretchedness I feel.  It gives me emotional comfort and the strength to accept what is to come.  The concept seems to rectify the violating injustice of death.
I read Raymond Moody's excerpt on looking into a mirror in a completely blacked out room as a way of connecting with passed loved ones.  I tried it and, unfortunately, as usual...nothing...sigh.

Hi Bizzy,
I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone in this search for meaning and asking yourself questions about what happens next?
I wish I knew the answers. I wish I could help you with this.
The only thing I can do is share with you what has worked for me: As a spiritual person myself (I don't practice any religion) I believe that the only thing we can control is how we live our lives. Whatever happens after (if something happens) is a bonus.
Now on the other hand I know people who have lost somebody to death and they, in their search for answers, have gone to mediums. These are people I know and I truly believe that they wouldn't lie. After having their experience and for what they have shared about the connections they made with their loved ones, I am now a little bit more inclined to believe in the posibility of something else. I don't know if this is something I would try but if it helps others that's great.
Well, it's been nice to share this with you. I wish you the best.

Hi Bizzy

I came across your posting and it got me thinking about a turning point in my life.  It was a time when I was doing a lot of soul-searching about the meaning of life and afterlife.  I came across something that I thought that I would share with you.  I found it very helpful.    – eKim

WHAT IS EXISTENCE?

Physicists tell us that matter cannot be either created or destroyed

For example, let’s say you were explaining elementary physics to a wide-eyed five year old.  You take an ice cube from the freezer and put into a bowl on the counter.  When the ice cube has melted, you could ask the child what they see, in the absence of the ice cube.  They would of course, tell you that they see water.  Next, you could boil the water until it was gone and ask them what they see in the absence of the water.  They would of course, tell you that they see steam.  Any child can understand this simple example of matter changing form.

Without any consideration of Religion or Spirituality, this leads me to believe that, humans (being composed of matter), exist forever, in some form or other.

It is, generally speaking, in our increasingly secular world, a stretch of the imagination, for many people to see this continuity of existence, into eternity.

When I pause to take into account both time, and the universe as being infinite, it then appears rather foolish for me to base my own perceived “truth” within the limitations imposed by the things that I have learned and the experiences that I have had.

As a qualifier, I must state that, although I do consider myself a spiritual person, I have not attended a church in nearly two decades.  The following is simply a story representing my point of view, not an attempt at proselytizing.  Therefore, it is with an open mind and heart that I share this story with you.

Many years ago I read a story about Lord Thomson of Fleet.  Someone asked him if he believed in life after death.  Although I have forgotten where I heard the story of his reply, the gist of it remains buried deep in my memory.  I found the story so powerful and comforting, that I have incorporated it into my own belief system.  I will share this story, (in my own words) as best as I can remember it.

The Changing of Matter, Matters

Once, in a place of great love, peace and joy existed ‘Little One’ who being ethereal, was without form or shape.  ‘Little One’ lived in harmony with many other ‘Little Ones’ just like himself.  Everything was wonderful.  ‘Little One’ could not imagine a better place.

One day, the ‘Creator of All’ approached ‘Little One’ and said, ‘Little One’, fruit of my creation, the time has come for you to leave this place; to go to a place of great warmth and wonder.”

‘Little One’ was dismayed, for he loved the ‘Creator of All’ and he loved this place of great love, peace and joy.  ‘Little One’ said, “I do not want to leave.  There can be no place more wonderful than this.”  The ‘Creator of All’ said, “Go forth, ‘Little One’, for it is in the ‘Transformation’ that you will find happiness.”  ‘Little One’ did not understand and was afraid of the unknown.

The ‘Great Day of Transformation’ arrived.  ‘Little One’ soon became very happy with his ‘Transformation’, into the new form of his existence.  As he floated in a watery warmth, he found the happiness that the ‘Creator of All’ had promised. He was connected to a long tube that drifted away from him.  Everything that he needed flowed through this tube to nurture him.  From somewhere came soft, muffled sounds that comforted him.  Everything was wonderful.  ‘Little One’ could not imagine a better place.

After a time that seemed to pass much too quickly, the ‘Creator of All’ said, “Little One’, fruit of my creation, the time has come for you to leave this place; to be born unto a place of great love and adventure.”

‘Little One’ was dismayed, for he loved the ‘Creator of All’ and he loved this place of great love, warmth and wonder.

‘Little One’ was afraid.  His world was coming apart.  He was leaving this place of great love, warmth and wonder.  He crossed the threshold to a place of bright light and noise.  ‘Little One’ was afraid, but only for a moment.

Soon he found himself in the loving embrace of the mother and father who were very excited at his arrival.  They knew his name, for they said, “Oh ‘Little One’, we have waited so long to have you to love.  Everything was wonderful.  ‘Little One’ could not imagine a better place.

Days turned into weeks that became months, that flowed into year after year of a very happy life.  “Little One”, loved the blue of the sky, the warmth of the sun and the feeling of the soil beneath his feet.  He was surrounded by people that he loved, and who loved him.  He wanted to stay in this wonderful world forever.

One day, the ‘Creator of All’ approached ‘Little One’ and said, “ ‘Little One’, fruit of my creation, the time has come for you to leave this place; to go to a place of great love, peace and joy.”

The ‘Great Day of Transformation’ arrived.  ‘Little One’ was afraid.  His world was coming apart.  He was leaving this place of great love, and adventure.  Everything that he knew and loved would be gone.  Everyone that he loved and who loved him would be gone.

He crossed the threshold to a place of bright light and the joyful noise of praise and song.  Soon he found himself in the loving embrace of the ‘Creator of All’ who had created him. The ‘Creator of All’ knew his name and said, “Oh ‘Little One’, I have waited so long for you to come back home and to have you to love.  Everything was wonderful.  ‘Little One’ felt a love, joy and peace that was more powerful than anything he had ever known.  ‘Little One’ could not imagine a better place to remain for eternity.

Hi,
Welcome to our community Debbie56. I am glad you found us. Is the CHF fairly well controlled? Do you have family or close friends who live nearby?

I understand from your post that faith has been and continues to be the anchor and support you need to face illness. I would be interested in what you think about the article written by Glen Horst
Spirituality and Life-Threatening Illness and the response  to one person’s question of How do I let go of my anxiety about death and about the meaning of life?

Take care

Katherine

Hi Debbie

How would you describe your understanding of your faith now when you compare it to your understanding of your faith before your illness?

Is your faith a primary pillar of support for you?

What other forms of support do you have?

How can we here at Virtual Hospice specifically help you?

I there some specific topic that you would like to discuss?  You can always open up a new topic item to start a new thread of discussion.

You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Welcome to CVH Radical Rick,

I am so sorry to hear about your devastating diagnosis.

Like so many of us, you appear to be searching for belief in something other than what is all around us.  I'm not religious either, but I too search.  So far, all I can say is that, in my dotage,(!) I tend to look towards Nature for possible answers.  What seems to have been in my mind for lo these many years is the, possibly simplistic - at least to others, recognition of Nature as the Great Conservator.  Everything under the sun seems to be used, re-used and recreated, so it's hard to believe that creations as marvellous as human hearts and minds would be totally wasted.  I haven't got beyond this point, wish I could, but it does give me a certain degree of comfort.  Much needed now that my husband is so ill.

I was raised Catholic, went to convent schools which literally drenched me with religion.  However, when I turned 15 and was enduring some truly terrible times, I did pray for help - unceasingly for over a month.  None came.  At which point I informed the Powers that Be (aka God) that as he obviously didn't believe in me, I didn't believe in him.  End of formalized religion.

I envy anyone who has a deeply ingrained faith in God.  But I believe that that faith is a remarkable gift, one which I have never received.

My closest relative growing up was my tiny Irish grandmother.  She never, ever let me down.  She was a devout Catholic, who practiced her faith every day.  The nuns at my convent used to tell me she was a saint.  Maybe.  All I know is when my life becomes unbearable, if I turn to her, I feel a measure of comfort.

I wish I could offer you some of that comfort.  But I am glad that you have found us.  We are all fellow-travellers here, facing some overwhelming odds.  But we provide each other with huge measures of love, concern, shared tears and, yes, laughter.

Please join us, RR.  We do care.

Welcome to our community radicalrick. As Oldbat said I am glad you found us.   It must be so difficult to face such a tough diagnosis.

What are your thoughts on what life is about? Your nickname has made me curious – would you say you are radical?

eKIM started the thread What Is Existence? Is There Life after Life? which may not be exactly what you are interested in, but it might give you more food for thought.

Thanks for bringing this thread to life again – I look forward to the conversation continuing.

Welcome Radical Rick,
Thank you for asking a very personal question. You will see that there are a variety of responses that you can read on this thread and others. They are so dependent of the individual belief systems. I would like to put out some thoughts that might help you to think about life/death.
Do you think that man, being created the highest in the created world, was done so just to live and then die? Do the large number of individuals that have written books on their near death and out of body experiences tell us something?
I always like the idea of a baby in the mothers womb resisting to be born, believing that the womb is the best place ever, and yet after it happens it is more than could be imagioned.
I feel like e-kim stated in Sept., without faith there is not much hope. I personally do not fear death because my hope in Jesus assures me that things in the next spirit world will be unbelievable. Please keep seeking feedback from a wide variety of people and professionals to help you form your own beliefs. Also keep posting as to how you are doing.

Brayden
